A dream I had last night – a short story

In my dream last night we went riding down a dirt road and came to a friends house in the country. We got out to say hi but everyone was in turmoil and anxious. We went outside to look at the sky because the sky was very bright. Everyone came outside and started telling us all about the drama in the house and you took my hand and we ran into a blackberry patch but they didn’t have briars on them. We sat on the dirt under them and they made a safe canopy around us and you kissed me and it tasted like berries when you did and we both smiled. You had my face in both your hands and you said beautiful things to me and I said I loved you and we kept kissing because it tasted so good and we couldn’t stop smiling or laughing. And in our little berry fort we were alone and happy for a small little while that seemed like a lifetime. Then it was as if I was being pulled from a dream within a dream and and all the sudden we were both aware of the sound of the motor of my truck running on the dirt road and I knew I had to leave. You told me you were going to cut threw the blackberry field because your house was just on the other side and you would get back faster. I was worried about the briars cutting you but you said it would be fine, to look, we didn’t have even a scratch on us. I looked at my clean arms and yours too and kisses your wrists. We let go and my truck was only a few steps away now idling in the middle of the dirt road. I felt something tickling my arm and I looked down and saw blood and briars stuck all in the white flesh of my skin. I felt panic and turned around to look for you and I could see you in the middle of the field I was standing on a hill looking down over the patch and the berries were like waves lapping over you chest deep in the ocean. I could see the back of your shirt was soaked with large splotches of blood but you were moving steady forward and were more than halfway threw the huge field. You looked back at me and smiled the most beautiful smile and waved like nothing in the world was wrong. I waved back and knew immediately you were going to make it. I got in my truck and everything was covered in a fine layer of dirt. When I put my hand on the wheel I could see the blood on my arms was already dry and flaking off in big chunks. All the windows in the truck were down and as I began to drive the wind was blowing so hard it felt like it completely cleaned me. I could see dirt and clumps of dried blood flying out the windows and I was glad to be almost home and then I woke up. It was a good dream.
